A new biomass power plant is getting off the ground in Ayebo, Côte d’Ivoire,

The 46 MW facility, one of the largest of its kind in West Africa, will boost the country’s bid  to generate 45% of energy from renewable sources by 2030, according to Africa Business Communities.

The plant, fed by palm tree leaves and branches, is expected to cut 4.5 million tons of CO2 emissions and will benefit about 1.7 million people

The Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund is financing the project with a EUR35 million loan, and the plant will be owned and operated by joint venture Biovea Energie under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

The construction phase will create about 500 job opportunities with another 1 000 expected once the project is commissioned.
