In the driver’s seat An interactive digital platform being trialled among engineering students in South Africa aims to prepare them for a career in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The Yakh’iFuture interactive website – part of the High Gear programme set up by the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) – is being used to develop an EV curriculum for the country’s TVET colleges. ‘It is important that we prioritise programmes and initiatives that enable skills development for young people and students alike to make them more employable, and the Yakhi’Future platform has been designed to do just that,’ says Aruna Singh, the DHET’s chief director of programmes and qualifications. The platform allows students to explore possible careers in the EV industry; play games to develop new skills required by employers; and to test their aptitude. Image: Gallo/Getty Images 2 August 2022
