Côte d’Ivoire is strengthening its energy-producing sector by building a thermal power plant.

Signing a US$431 million agreement with French water and electricity management company Eranove SA, the 390 MW thermal power plant will be based in Jacqueville, 61 km southwest of Abidjan, according to the company.

‘This plant is part of the government’s desire to strengthen the power generation capacity in the region, through new units entrusted to experienced private partners to enable Côte d’Ivoire to double its energy capacity,’ says Petroleum, Energy and Renewable Energy Minister Abdourahmane Cissé. The plant will be owned by independent power producer Ciprel, once completed.

The West African nation currently has an installed generation capacity of 2 200 MW and exports to neighbouring countries, including Ghana, Burkina Faso and Liberia.
