The right call In yet another move to diversify its economy, Nigeria has opened a smartphone assembly plant in Lagos, according to a Ventures Africa report. The unveiling included the launch of AfriOne’s Champion and Gravity smartphone ranges. The plant will also produce dual-sim mobile phones, educational tablets and Android-based smartwatches. Furthermore, the Lagos state government has signed an MOU that will see 5 000 higher education students benefit from broad-based knowledge regarding using ICT for both personal and organisational empowerment. While this is the country’s first smartphone assembly plant, a feature phone assembly plant was set up in the West African nation in 2014 – delivering a total of 50 000 Nigerian-made feature phones in 2015. 9 May 2017 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
