A 500-bed African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) is taking shape in Abuja, Nigeria.

The African Finance Corporation is contributing US$40 million to the medical centre, which is being built in four stages over six years, according to Africa Business Communities.

The first stage, a 170-bed specialist hospital, is expected to open its doors to patients next year.

The AMCE is being developed by the Afreximbank in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London.

The project will create about 3 000 jobs during construction, and the medical centre will employ more than 200 people and offer training opportunities for doctors and nurses. The AMCE is projected to offer healthcare services to more than 350 000 patients across Africa within its first five years of operation.
