Starting out Even though half of Africa’s tech hubs are concentrated across five countries, nearly each of the other 49 countries on the continent have at least one or two that are active. A study conducted by the GSMA – a trade body representing the interests of global mobile operators – shows that South Africa is leading the ICT revolution on the continent with a total of 54 active tech hubs. Egypt is ranked number two with 28, followed by Kenya with 27, Nigeria with 23 and Morocco with 21. According to the study, of the 422 tech hubs that were screened across 93 African cities, 314 were found to be active (showing recent online activity via websites or social media, or reported active by local experts). Meanwhile, 60% of those hubs are described as incubators and accelerators, which are designed to speed up the growth of start-ups through business support, resources and services. 4 July 2017 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
