Malawi is preparing to enter the space industry.

According to Daud Suleman, director-general of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, the country is to set up a space agency to give the country a platform to engage in the global satellite sector.

Space in Africa reports that Malawi is also to host its first space conference in November to, among other things, discuss the protection and utilisation of Malawi’s space resources in line with the Malawi 2063 Vision.

‘The space programme will provide Malawi with a voice in the exploration of global space initiatives and help the country protect its orbital slot, which it risks losing if not utilised,’ says Suleman.

As a member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Malawi has two orbital slots in the ITU’s planned services databases. However, neither slot is currently occupied by a satellite.
