Spill the beans Ethiopia is currently one of the world’s poorest countries, despite experiencing double-digit GDP growth over the last decade (10.2% in 2015). Ethiopians have an average GDP per capita of under US$600 but locals love their coffee – consuming an average of 200 cups per person a year. No other nation in that income group drinks as much. Indonesia, for example, is the world’s third-largest coffee producer, yet Indonesians consume around just 34 cups per person annually. According to a Ventures Africa report, last year Ethiopians bought about 127 000 tons of coffee, a quarter of the total volume of coffee sold in the whole of the Middle East and Africa. 27 September 2016 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
