Special catering A US$100 000 donation is set to provide immediate relief for two South African communities that have been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding from the General Electric Foundation will enable FoodForward SA (a food-distribution NPO established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa) to supply 20 000 people in Soweto and Alexandra with one meal per day for 12 months. FoodForward SA recovers quality surplus food from retailers, manufacturers and farmers, and redistributes it to entities that serve the poor. According to Andy du Plessis, MD of FoodForward SA, the funding will help the initiative reach its network of 1 200 vetted beneficiary organisations, through which it feeds nearly 700 000 people per day. 26 October 2021 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
