Lucky shot South Africans are being offered a ZAR2 million incentive to go for their COVID-19 jab. In light of the Omicron variant and impending fourth wave, the government has announced that everyone vaccinated against COVID-19 before the end of the year will stand a chance of winning up to ZAR100 000 in a series of lucky draws to be conducted in December and January. ‘The new variant is a wake-up call for us all,’ says David Harrison, CEO of the DG Murray Trust, which is managing the initiative. ‘In the past month, the rate of first dose vaccinations for adults has plunged by nearly 50%. While three-fifths of the over-50 population are now vaccinated, there are still 4 million individuals in that age group who are not.’ He adds that 13 million people aged 18 to 34 are also still unvaccinated. In total, the lucky draw comprises five prizes valued at ZAR100 000 each; 50 prizes of ZAR10 000 each; and 1 000 prizes of ZAR1 000 each. 7 December 2021 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
