An estimated 300 000 people in Nigeria will soon have access to solar power.
In a joint project, Mobile Power (MOPO) and distributed utility company CrossBoundary Access are setting up solar-powered battery hubs across the country, where people can swap batteries through a pay-as-you-use model, according to ESI-Africa.
CrossBoundary Access has committed US2.25 million to the project with the potential to increase it to US$10 million to fund the development and construction hubs, which it will own.
‘This is what the grid of the future looks like. Using batteries to distribute electricity is the biggest revolution in the power sector since the invention of transformers,’ says CrossBoundary co-founder and MD, Gabriel Davies.
An average MOPO hub will create full-time employment for at least four people in the surrounding communities. The hubs are designed for rapid deployment without the need for any cabling.
