Green means go South African chemicals and energy company Sasol has announced that it has produced its first green hydrogen. Engineering News reports that the fuel was processed during the commissioning phase of a ZAR350 million pilot project in Sasolburg to convert an existing hydrolyser to run on renewable energy. While the first batch of hydrogen was produced using electricity from a 3 MW solar plant on site, the hydrolyser will eventually also be powered by the 69 MW Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm in the Eastern Cape. ‘Once operational, the Msenge wind farm together with the Sasolburg solar farm will provide sufficient renewable power to commercialise green hydrogen in South Africa,’ says Sasol CEO Fleetwood Grobler. The pilot plant in Sasolburg is expected to produce 5 tons of green hydrogen a day from 2024. 29 August 2023 Image: Flickr
