Green shoots Rwanda has issued its first export licence for medical cannabis. Africa Business Communities reports that the local branch of US firm KKOG Global has secured a five-year licence to grow medical cannabis for export. The company has invested US$10 million in setting up Rwanda’s first cannabis facility on five hectares in Musanze, which is scheduled for completion in May 2024. ‘The facility will be the first of its kind with extraction and research components as well as cannabis end product development. There are plans to begin distillation to create the first cannabis-infused liquors at the facility in 2025,’ says Rene Joseph, CEO if KKOG Rwanda. Rwanda legalised the cultivation and sale of medical cannabis in 2021, hoping to take advantage of the global cannabis market, which is expected to expand to about US$200 billion by 2028. 26 March 2024 Image: Unsplash
