Riding high South Africa’s first free-standing elevated traffic circle is to be built in Cape Town, in the Western Cape. The ‘sky circle’ forms part of the city’s roll-out of the MyCiTi public bus service to the metro south-east. It will be located at the intersection of Govan Mbeki Road and Jan Smuts Drive in Hanover Park. According to Business Tech, the project aims to deliver a reliable service to commuters, reduce travel times, ease traffic congestion and offer pedestrians and cyclists dedicated lanes separate from the road. The circle will be about 6.2 m above ground and will exclusively be used by the MyCiTi buses. Of the total funding amount, ZAR15 million will be allocated to creating temporary work opportunities for residents who are registered on the city’s local jobseekers database and another ZAR15 million will be spent on local sub-contractors to provide goods and services to the main contractor. Work is scheduled to start in July, and will last for 44 months. 14 June 2022 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
