Power packed In South Africa, green hydrogen research is set to receive a ZAR35 million boost over the next five years. As reported by Engineering news, this follows the announcement that North-West University’s (NWU) Hydrogen South Africa Infrastructure Centre of Competence is collaborating with Japanese partners on an international green hydrogen and green ammonia programme. ZAR14 million has been earmarked for 2022/23, with an additional ZAR21 million allocated to the 2024 to 2026 period. The programme will address the sustainability issues developing countries face in providing practical research outcomes to benefit local and global societies, with a spotlight on green hydrogen research through water electrolysis (whereby electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen), as well as green ammonia. NWU will focus primarily on developing green hydrogen via renewable energy and advanced water electrolysis. It will work with Japan’s Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development programme – specifically Numazu College’s National Institute of Technology for technical collaboration in green ammonia, knowledge sharing and student exchange. 7 February 2023 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
