Public institutions across Kenya will soon be able to take advantage of high-speed internet connectivity.

More than 180 institutions in the states of Kisii and Nyamira are to be linked to the country’s fibre optic network via cables that are being rolled out along power lines, which is faster as it requires no trench digging.

ITWeb reports that Kenya aims to lay an additional 100 000 km of fibre by 2027.

‘The extension of the national fibre optic network will be important in empowering local communities, providing access to quality education, healthcare and government services and creating a conducive environment for businesses to flourish,’ said John Kipchumba Kanui, principal secretary in the State Department for ICT and Digital.

ICT labs have also been launched at four tertiary institutions in Nyamira, to empower ’young people with the digital skills needed to secure jobs and seize new opportunities in the digital economy’.
