The government of Tanzania has announced the introduction of cage fish farming to the north-western region to grow the economy.

Land has already been allocated for the project at Kyamalange village in the Bukoba Rural District of the country’s Kagera region, which borders Lake Victoria. The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Sciences and Technology in Arusha has agreed to lead research into aquatic animal life and also plans to open a campus in the Bukoba municipality.

These developments follow the signing of an MoU between the Ministry of Livestock Development (Fisheries), Kagera regional leaders, the Tanzania Agricultural Catalytic Trust and the institution.

In addition, local company Jahazi East Africa has pledged to invest about US$26 million into the project, and will help find suitable markets for the farm’s products once it is operational.
