The automotive industry in South Africa is driving the adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs) with a project to set up an extra 100 NEV charging hubs along the country’s major highways.

According to Moneyweb, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) – acting on behalf of local original equipment manufacturers and vehicle importers and distributors – has been adjudicating bids from nine parties for a multimillion-rand contract to build the charging centres.

The automotive business council says it is waiting for its recommendation to be signed off by its principals before announcing the successful bid.

‘We have recommended one company and also recommended that this company should bring in at least three more local black-owned companies who can understudy their work for skills transfer, skills development and, of course, for black economic empowerment purposes,’ says NAAMSA CEO Mikel Mabasa.
