South African coal producer Thungela Resources is partnering with the Council of Geosciences to research ways to address and reduce emissions from burning thermal coal.

The organisations have signed a MoU to further research into new technologies such as carbon capture, coal utilisation and storage, reports Engineering News.

‘As a coal producer and exporter, we recognise the importance of adapting and mitigating emissions,’ says Thungela CEO July Ndlovu.

He says the partnership ‘will contribute to climate change efforts by developing and implementing geoscience-based solutions that support national priorities and international climate agreements’.

According to council CEO Mosa Mabuza, the two organisations ‘are setting the stage for significant advancements in carbon capture and sustainable resource management’.
