More than 20 000 households in Kenya’s underserved communities will be powered up by mini grids using renewable energy.

According to ESIAfrica, results-based finding (RBF) grants worth a total of US7.3 million have been awarded to three local energy companies – Renewvia, PowerHive and Kudura Energy East Africa.

Renewvia will use its US$4.2 million grant to instal a 2.4 MW solar mini grid to supply energy to 14 000 households in refugee camps in Kakuma in Turkana County. The project will have 6 MWh of battery storage.

Kudura Energy will supply renewable energy to 5 909 households in Turkana while PowerHive has been awarded a RBF grant of US$300 000 to connect 1 202 houses in rural south-western Kenya.

The grants will be disbursed on completion of the projects, according to CEI Africa, a finance facility seeking to improve access to energy in sub-Saharan Africa
