Metal map With global demand heating up for copper and other minerals used in the manufacture of electric vehicles, Zambia has launched a countrywide geophysical survey. Using high-resolution aerial geophysical technology, the survey is expected to enable targeted exploration of the country’s mineral and water resources, reports ITWeb. At the launch, President Hakainde Hichilema said the survey would also help Zambia to realise the true market value of its mineral wealth and engage in transactions with greater certainty, thus creating jobs and driving economic growth. ‘The project underscores our commitment to unlocking the untapped potential of the country’s mineral resources as we work towards achieving our goal of 3 million tonnes of copper production by 2031,’ Hichilema said. Although copper output fell to 698 000 tons in 2023 from 763 000 tons the year before, the country is still one of the top 10 copper-producing countries in the world, according to Statista. 20 August 2024 Image: Freepik
