Metal machine In Ghana, a US$80 million steel plant has been commissioned in Prampram near the capital, Accra. According to Ghana Business News, the 250 000 tpa capacity B5 Plus plant will convert scrap metal sourced from across the country into iron rods, wire rods, round bars and general steel products for the construction industry in both Ghana and the rest of West Africa. The factory falls under the government’s One District, One Factory programme to end Ghana’s dependence on imports and the export of raw materials, and create an economy focused on manufacturing, value-adding and the export of processed goods. At the launch of the plant last week, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo noted that 76 factories operating under the initiative employ about 139 000 people. The plant is expected to create 3 000 direct and indirect jobs, according to the company. In a US$70 million second phase, the plant will expand its capacity by 300 000 tons of mixed-steel goods. 20 April 2021 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
