Meet and greet Cape Town has once again been named the continent’s best business tourism destination for the fourth consecutive year. In the latest financial year, the Cape Town and Western Cape Convention Bureau secured 33 new bids with an estimated attendance of 28 000 delegates – adding around US$31.7 million to South Africa’s economy. Over the past six years, conferences have injected more than US$112 billion into the country. According to an AFKInsider report, the city jumped 15 spots to number 39 in the world after 62 international association meetings were held during 2016, with an additional 12 in Stellenbosch. Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde, says: ‘Through the Cape Town Air Access initiative, we are also making it easier for tourists to reach us. We know conferences have a significant economic impact, driving growth and creating jobs for residents. Business tourists have the potential to become leisure tourists, traders and investors into our region.’ 30 May 2017 Image: Cape Town International Convention Centre
