Healthy start Egypt has broken ground on Capital Med – a major medical city based in Badr, which forms part of the greater Cairo area. According to project lead Egyptians for Health Care Services (EHCS), the three-phase development will spread over 445 000 m2 in a medical precinct with a 2 000-bed capacity. Phase 1 is expected to include the 374-bed Badr University centre; an outpatient facility; a rehab, cosmetic and wellness institute; and an emergency/trauma, precision medicine and transplant institute. In addition, a shopping mall, hotel and both commercial and residential areas will be built. EHCS says the first phase of construction will cost around US$330 million. The entire project (all three phases) is expected to create around 13 000 jobs over its seven- to 10-year span. 4 February 2020 Image: Almay
