Tanzania has announced plans to establish a major port hub for East and Central Africa.

To this end the Tanzania Port Authority has contracted a company to conduct a geological survey on the expansion of Tanga port, as reported in Construction Review Online.

‘We signed a four-month contract to conduct a geological survey in the berths area of Tanga port from April to August 2018,’ says port manager Percival Salama. ‘After the initial work of surveying is completed, the second phase, which will involve deepening of the dock – from the current 3.5m to 5m to 11m – will start as soon as possible.’

Salama says that, by 2020, the port will be able to accommodate bigger vessels without difficulty, and it will serve Tanzania’s northern regions of Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara, as well as Mara, Singida, Dodoma and Shinyanga.
