Cape Town in the Western Cape, South Africa, is putting its Vissershok landfill to work, with plans for the site to generate its own electricity from its gas emissions.

As part of its recently completed gas flaring plant, the City of Cape Town is now implementing a ZAR197 million project to convert the landfill gas into electricity.

Engineering News reports that to reduce methane emissions from the landfill, wells are dug to extract the gas, which is then channelled to the new flaring facility. In future, the gas will be funnelled to a gas engine to generate electricity.

With the design of the gas turbine already under way, the city expects the first electricity to be generated in 2024/25. The facility will initially have a 2 MW generating capacity, increasing to at least 7 MW depending on gas yields.
