Jewel of the seas Morocco is now home to the largest port – in terms of capacity – in the Mediterranean and, indeed, Africa. The recent inauguration of Tanger Med Port II has expanded the capacity of the original port from 3.5 million TEUs to around 9 million TEUs, adding a couple of terminals to the existing two. According to Tanger Med Port Authority, Tanger Med Port I commenced operations in 2009, and construction of Tanger Med Port II began in May 2010, with a view to making the entire port one of the most important trans-shipment hubs in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The blueprint for the second phase included 4.8 km of breakwaters; 2.8 km of container piers (with 18m depths); and dockside reception capacity for seven mega-container carriers. 2 July 2019 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
