Career starter Smart technology is being employed to put entrepreneurs in South Africa’s townships on the path to self-employment in the food industry. In a joint initiative by the government’s Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) and NPO Empire Partner Foundation, the aspiring entrepreneurs will be equipped with a tablet, a smart food cart and an e-commerce app. The food cart features a location-tracking and reporting device and will come with digital payment machines that will accept card payments and process value-added services, reports ITWeb. Entrepreneurs will also be supplied with their initial stock and working capital. CHIETA CEO Yershen Pillay says the organisation aims to ‘support 2 000 small businesses and 200 new start-ups by 2025’. 28 March 2023 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
