A water desalination plant planned for Cape Town’s Foreshore area is provisionally slated to begin providing clean water to the city by 2030.

The City of Cape Town municipality is conducting a feasibility for the  22 000 m² sea-water, reverse-osmosis operation, according to Engineering News.

Using June 2023 as a base date, the estimated capital cost for the plant is ZAR5 billion, and it will be funded through the city’s water tariff.

The city’s head of water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says an independent advisory panel of 12 experts is helping to guide the establishment of a permanent desalination plant in the city. The city is seeking to augment its water supply by 300 million litres of water a day from a variety of sources.
