Earth power A Kenyan company looks set to build a new data centre that runs on geothermal energy. Following the signing of an MoU, the planned mega data centre will be located in the country’s geothermal-rich region in the Great Rift Valley. Africa Business Communities reports that the agreement was signed between Kenya-based data centre provider EcoCloud and UAE technology conglomerate G42 to build the 100 MW capacity data centre, with the possibility of expanding this to 1GW. ‘By harnessing the power of geothermal energy, we are not only meeting the region’s data needs but also setting a new standard for eco-friendly infrastructure,’ says EcoCloud CEO Amos Siwo. ‘The first-ever data centre powered by geothermal energy establishes a new benchmark for eco-friendly infrastructure and positions Kenya as a leader in sustainable industrialisation,’ Kenyan President William Ruto said at the signing. 12 March 2024 Image:Freepik
