Fuelled for the future Six African countries have launched a platform to promote green-hydrogen development across the continent. The Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance aims to foster co-operation in creating a sustainable enabling environment for developing public and regulatory policy; capacity building; financing; and drawing up the necessary certification needed for hydrogen production for both domestic use and export. The platform was set up by Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Egypt, Morocco and Mauritania. The collective effort aims to advance the continent’s transition away from its reliance on fossil fuels to new energy technology. Mining Weekly reports that the platform will also aid workstream collaboration; knowledge sharing; research and development; and building partnerships with the private sector, development finance institutions and civil society. The alliance has invited more African countries to respond to opportunities presented by lower-cost renewables. The Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance was launched at the first Green Hydrogen Global Assembly in Spain this month, backed by the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, the Green Hydrogen Organisation, the AfDB and the UN Economic Commission for Africa. 24 May 2022 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
