Fuel pod The Atlantis Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, has signed an MoU to start trialling a hydrogen-powered generator as an alternative to diesel generators. The Power Pod, developed by South African-based fuel cell technology company Hyena, will use locally produced liquefied petroleum gas as the hydrogen carrier and will provide 5kW to 24kW of power. The unit will be put through its paces at the SEZ’s Zone One main gate complex, according to ESIAfrica. If the pilot is successful Hyena’s fuel cell technology will be deployed across the SEZ. Niels Luchters, co-founder and CEO of Hyena, says the hydrogen-powered generator is designed to address the needs of small to medium-sized applications. ‘This collaboration is an essential step in bringing cleaner, hydrogen-based power solutions to the continent,’ he says. For the SEZ, the technology is intended to strengthen the resilience of its power supply. 5 November 2024 Image: Pexels
