Flying high Ethiopia is set to get a new airport capable of handling 100 million travellers a year. One of Africa’s largest airlines, Ethiopian Airways has signed an MoU with Dubai-based consultants Dar to design the US$6 billion airport at Bishoftu, 40 km from Addis Ababa. It will be able to accommodate four times as many passengers as the existing Bole International at Addis Ababa, making it among the biggest airports in Africa. The airport, which will have four runways across 35km2, will be built in phases, with the first phase expected to cater for 60 million travellers. The project timeline is expected to last five years, reports News24. ‘The scope of the agreement is for Dar to develop the detailed design of the new airport and at the same time to assist Ethiopian Airlines in the selection of the contractors who will build the new airport facilities,’ says Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Mesfin Tasew. 13 August 2024 Image: Freepik
