Clear vision A new blockchain solution that tracks cobalt from the mine to the end-product is being piloted in the DRC. Re|Source is the result of a partnership between electric vehicle (EV) supply-chain majors, including Glencore, CMOC, Eurasian Resources Group and Umicore. Trialled in real operating conditions, Re|Source is designed to address the growing need for cobalt value-chain visibility – from upstream production facilities to downstream EV production sites, according to a Glencore media statement. ‘Through this pilot, we are supporting the development of this tool for our customers who seek to understand and demonstrate the origin of the cobalt units in their products,’ says Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg. The blockchain tech integrates industrial sustainable mining and sourcing standards and frameworks, and explores how aspects of the related GHG emissions along the value chain can be traced and disclosed. Re|Source is also affiliated with the Global Battery Alliance’s Battery Passport project, which aims to transform the entire value chain to make battery production more responsible and sustainable. The pilot will run until end-2021, with the roll-out of the final solution expected in 2022. 25 May 2021 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
