Power packed The largest gas power plant in Côte d’Ivoire has started operations. The Azito Phase IV simple-cycle power plant will add 180 MW – representing about 8% of the country’s current installed capacity – to the national grid, enough to power more than 300 000 homes. It was built in the Yopougon district of Abidjan by independent power producer Azito Energie and US multinational General Electric Company. GE installed a heavy-duty gas turbine that can operate on a range of fuel compositions, including up to 30% hydrogen, without hardware changes. The technology promises more than 10 million operating hours. African Business reports that the plant will also use big data analytics to improve Azito’s fleet performance and make smart operational decisions via performance-management software, which will analyse the plant’s performance and operations to monitor and diagnose possible problems, and improve capacity planning and efficiency. 12 July 2022 Image: Azito Energies
