    Mineral sufficiency

A US$2 billion expansion project at the Lumwama copper mine in Zambia’s North West province is expected to get under way this year.

Mining Weekly reports that initial production at the Lumwama Super Pit is scheduled for 2028. The mine is expected to produce about 240 000 tons a year over 30 years, making it one of the world’s major copper producers.

According to Canadian mining behemoth Barrick, the copper mine has contributed almost US$3 billion to the country’s economy since 2019 through royalties, taxes, salaries and the procurement of goods and services from local businesses. Last year it sourced US$472 million worth of goods and services locally, more than 81% of total spend for the mine.

A business accelerator programme has also been introduced to improve the business skills of the Zambian contractors in its supply chain, equipping them to thrive in business beyond the life of mine.
