In Zambia, a local IT firm says it plans to start manufacturing the country’s first locally developed laptop.

According to ITWeb, NetOne Zambia intends building a US$12 million factory to manufacture 30 000 of the laptops a month, under the brand name Neo.

The company says it expects the Department of Education will be its main customer, adding that NetOne already runs a programme through its Project Digitise division aimed at putting laptops in the hands of teachers for ZK220 a month, including training, a personal internet connection and data.

CEO Bejoy Nettikadan says the company’s key objective is skills development, employment creation ‘and the execution of world-class technology in Zambia’.
