Generation gap South African gold mining major Sibanye-Stillwater is adding 140 MW of wind power to its renewable energy portfolio. Construction of the Umsinde Emoyeni wind farm – located near Murraysburg on the border between the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces – will start soon, with completion set for 2026, reports Engineering News. The project is the miner’s fourth renewable energy power purchase agreement, and will see it wheel energy across the grid to its mines in South Africa under the 20-year deal. Sibanye now has 407 MW of renewable energy under construction – about 70% of its long-term requirements in South Africa. It will be operated under a build, own and operate consortium led by African Clean Energy Developments and Energy Infrastructure Management Services – which fall under Old Mutual Alternative Investments’ African Infrastructure Investment Managers. The consortium also includes 100% black-owned Reatile Investments. 4 June 2024 Image: Unsplash
