A charity has developed a digital platform to improve the nutrition of food donated to needy children across South Africa

Created by Adam Browde, founder of food rescue and hunger relief charity SA Harvest, the nutrition tracker evaluates the nutritional value of food parcels dispatched to about 200 beneficiary organisations in the country.

Using data from the Food and Agricultural Organisation, the tracker identifies 60 essential nutrients in more than 1 000 food items and calculates their weight against the recommended daily allowance. The tracker also scores the nutritional value of each food bundle, according to Bizcommunity.

By aggregating the data, the platform can identify specific nutritional needs and shape future procurement. The data can also help warehouse workers assemble food bundles that have a balanced nutritional content.

‘This technology allows us to measure the average nutritional value of our million meals delivered per month. It’s part of our continuous commitment to ensuring dedicated focus on delivering balanced nutritional bundles to our beneficiary organisations and contributing towards reducing the scourge of childhood stunting,’ said Browde.
