Charged future Kenya’s national power utility is rolling out an electric vehicle (EV) project. The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has launched the initiative with four EVs in Nairobi as part of government efforts to shift from the use of vehicles powered by fossil fuels to EVs. The new vehicles include two SUVs and two double-cab pick-ups, which will be used for data collection and policy development. ESI Africa reports that the KenGen will use the data to transition its fleet to EVs. Abraham Serem, KenGen acting MD and CEO, says the data will provide ‘a comprehensive analysis of the feasibility of e-vehicles transition while also providing insights on initial technology choices for electric charging infrastructure in the country. The development of e-mobility is an area that will require a multi-sectoral approach’. The company also plans to instal more than 30 EV charging stations across the country in 2023. 13 December 2022 Image: Unsplash
