Fertile idea Egypt’s first green hydrogen production plant has been given a US$80 million boost. The equity bridge loan provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will fund Egypt Green Hydrogen’s electrolyser facility and ancillary works in Ain Sokhna, ESI Africa reports. The plant, powered by 260 MW of wind and solar energy, will produce green hydrogen for the Egyptian Fertiliser Company to manufacture green ammonia. The green ammonia is earmarked for export. Viewed as a proof-of-concept project for the country’s nascent green hydrogen industry, the electrolyser is expected to produce up to 15 000 tons of green hydrogen annually, saving a total of 130 000 tons in CO2 emissions a year. 21 March 2023 Image: Gallo/Getty Images
