The operator of one of South Africa’s two operational crude oil refineries says it will be compliant with new cleaner fuel specifications by a 2027 deadline.
Engineering News reports that Astron Energy, a Glencore subsidiary, has already laid the foundations for a gasoline hydrotreating process at its 100 000 bl/d refinery in Milnerton, Cape Town. It is investing ZAR6 billion in the refinery so that it meets Euro 5 specifications.
In 2017, South Africa delayed the implementation of its Clean Fuels II regulations by 10 years until 1 July 2027. The regulations stipulate that sulphur levels in both petrol and diesel must be reduced to 10 parts per million.
‘We will be supplying compliant fuels at the date asked of us,’ Astron CEO Thabiet Booley told lawmakers during a visit to the plant at the end of March.
