Ethical, innovative use of AI will be spurred on with the formation of the South African Artificial Intelligence Association.

The new industry body – made up of AI practitioners from the commercial, government, academic, start-up and NGO sectors – will promote responsible innovation in AI, reports ITWeb.

Members include German development agency GIZ; the non-profit Data Economy Policy Hub; South Africa’s Technology Innovation Agency; Tshwane University of Technology; the Western Cape provincial government; and Webber Wentzel.

According to founder Nick Bradshaw, the association will encourage ‘the adoption of responsible AI for the commercial and societal benefit of the citizens of South Africa with a primary focus on regulation, economic growth, trade, investment, fairness, equality and inclusivity’.

He says it is vitally important ‘that the opportunities AI presents are possible and available for everyone to embrace’.
