One of Africa’s most famed game parks – Addo Elephant Park – is going solar in a substantial way.
On behalf of the park – South Africa’s third-largest – located on the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape, South Africa National Parks (SANParks) is calling for tenders to instal a grid-tied 630 kWp solar PV plant for the Addo Main Rest Camp, according to ESI Africa.
The Addo project is in line with SANParks’ Green Energy Strategy that envisages saving energy on the demand side and replacing fossil fuels on the production side through the use of renewable energy.
The preparation and civil work includes site clearance; construction of a stormwater and subsurface drainage system; the erection of a 2.1m-high security fence; earthworks; and installation of access roads. The solar installation includes the 630 kWp solar PV array with monocrystalline PERC modules; galvanised steel mountings; and combiner boxes for improved system protection and monitoring.
The tender also covers the installation of five grid-tied inverters and the integration of backup emergency generators, among others.
According to News24, the Addo project is being funded to the tune of ZAR15 million.
It reported last year that 20 hybrid solar systems power the accommodation of the anti-poaching unit and a law enforcement centre in Addo, which was funded through a Wildlife Conservation Bond launched by the World Bank in 2022.
