The port of Nacala, Mozambique is set to be revamped and modernised over the next three years.

Africa’s deepest natural port on the eastern coast will soon receive a new, 400m-long reinforced concrete pier, 1.1 km road access and 8 ha of concrete paving in a bid to support the operation of the port and recovery of the container terminal, MacauHub reports. It is also anticipated to have a significant social and economic impact.

Expected to span 36 months, the US$123.2 million project will be carried out by Spanish and Portuguese construction firms Sacyr Somague Moçambique and Teixeira Duarte.

The Japan International Co-operation Agency has contributed US$273.6 million towards the development of the port.

Construction commenced at the beginning of October.
