A 400 MW liquid petroleum gas-fuelled (LPG) power plant is set to be built in Ghana’s port city of Tema in what is considered to be the first of its kind on the continent. Once completed, the US$953 million Bridge Power facility will be the largest LPG plant in the world.

According to an Asoko Insight report, in October the Early Power consortium – comprising US-based General Electric, Endeavor Energy Resources and Ghana-based Sage Petroleum – received parliamentary approval to commence construction. This forms part of an effort to boost the country’s power-generation capability, as more than one-third of electricity is still generated by the 50-year-old 1 020 MW Akosombo hydroelectric plant, which frequently has limited generation capacity due to low dam levels.

Furthermore, earlier in November, Italian company Eni signed up to explore the feasibility of constructing a solar power plant in Ghana’s northern savannah region.
