The new Segele gold mine in Ethiopia’s Gambella region has been officially inaugurated.

The inauguration was described as both a milestone and testament to the potential of the East African country’s mining industry.

The highlight of the ceremony, attended by dignitaries such as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and staff from European mining company Akobo Minerals, was a symbolic gold pour, which yielded 6.5 kg of gold.

‘We are proud to see this project reach a significant milestone, benefiting not only the national economy but also the communities around it,’ Ahmed said.

Akobo CEO Jørgen Evjen said the project was the result of years of dedication, collaboration and innovation.

‘We are especially grateful to the Ethiopian government, the Gambella region and the local community for their support,’ he said

Akobo has instituted several community initiatives supporting healthcare, education, local job creation and infrastructure improvements, according to Mining Weekly.

The Akobo Minerals website indicates that  Segele has an inferred gold resource of 78 kilotons at 20.9g/t gold, after drilling 3.160m over seven months.
