A centralised digital portal being used in Mpumalanga, South Africa, is expected to streamline road maintenance and improve outcomes.

The Road Maintenance Management System (MMS) – launched by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport – plans, tracks and reports on maintenance progress in real time, according to BusinessTech.

Local engineering and infrastructure consultancy firm Zutari says the system will allow the department to better co-ordinate road projects in the province, with greater efficiency and accuracy.

One of the highlighted features of the MMS is its interactive public portal, which allows road users to report issues, such as potholes.

In addition, a mobile app for site managers in the field does away with paperwork, allowing them to take photos of completed repairs and provide on-site updates.
