In a bid to empower the country’s youth, Mauritius is to provide free monthly mobile data packages to all citizens aged 18 to 25 years.

The initiative is the government’s bid to empower the country’s younger citizens and foster their digital inclusion. The country already boasts an internet penetration of more than 80%, reports ITWeb.

Other youth-focused programmes include free education from pre-primary to university and a once-off ‘independence’ grant of Rs20 000 (US$430) when they reach 18.

The Mauritius Revenue Authority will facilitate the distribution of free monthly mobile data packages to qualifying Mauritians.

Youth can apply for the package through a dedicated platform to be set up by the revenue service.

‘To get free internet access and remain connected, young people would receive a monthly package of 200GB working both on 4G and 5G networks,’ said Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.
