More than 200 000 solar PV panels are being erected as part of plans to supply 135 MW in renewable energy to the South African mining operations of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM).

Engineering News reports that Shanghai-listed Trina Solar will supply 205 161 of its P-type bifacial Vertex solar panels for the Merak 1 project, which is a joint venture between the Sola Group – an independent power producer partly owned by ARM sister company African Rainbow Energy and Power – and South African civil engineering company WBHO.

The Sola Group, WBHO and Trina Solar are also collaborating on the 195 MW Springbok solar power plant in the Free State, which will serve multiple off-takers.

The Springbok plant is reportedly the first privately owned solar facility to use N-type solar panels, which are considered more efficient and durable than traditional solar panels, absorbing more sunlight and generating more electricity.
